How to measure your head for a wig

April 27, 2025 Views: 49

If you’re new to wigs or just trying to make sure your next one fits like a dream, you’re in the right place. Figuring out your wig size is a small step that makes a huge difference. When your wig fits well, it stays put, feels comfy, and looks super natural—no awkward slipping or adjusting all day long.

First Things First: What You Wear Under Your Wig Matters
Here’s something not everyone thinks about: the way you wear your own hair under the wig can change your measurements. Yep, really!

If your hair’s in a bun or ponytail while measuring, that extra bulk at the back can throw everything off. It can make the wig ride up or sit weird, even if the measurements seem right on paper.

So before you start, here’s what I recommend:

If you usually wear your hair in a ponytail or bun under your wig, pop on a wig cap while measuring. It helps flatten things out and gives a more accurate size.

Whatever you usually wear under your wig—whether it’s a wig grip, a cap, or both—go ahead and wear that while measuring too.

Bonus tip: If you’re trying out one of our PureFit Grip Cap wigs, you don’t need to add a separate wig grip. The built-in grip is already doing the work for you!

Now, Let’s Measure That Head

Alright, let me walk you through how I measure my own head. (Fun fact: I have long hair, so I actually use two wig caps—a fishnet one and a nylon one. The combo helps smooth everything out and keeps things neat under the wig.)

Here’s what you’ll need:

A soft, flexible measuring tape. (Please don’t use one of those stiff ones from your toolbox—they don’t bend well and won’t give you a true reading.)

We’re going to start with the most important measurement: your head circumference.

How to Measure Circumference:

Start at the nape of your neck.

Wrap the tape up around your head, passing over your ears (but not on them!) and ending at your front hairline.

Make sure it’s snug, but not super tight.

Read the number. That’s your size!

I measured mine at 22 inches. I like a snug fit so the wig feels secure, not loose.

Here’s a little tip: measure at least three times. If you keep getting slightly different numbers, just average them out. Still not sure? Shoot us an email—we’re always happy to help!

Other Helpful Measurements (Not Essential, but Good to Know)
If you’re feeling fancy or just want to double-check, you can also measure:

Front to Nape: From the middle of your front hairline to the base of your neck.

Ear to Ear (Over the Top): Start at one ear (where it attaches to your head), go up over the crown, and down to the other ear.

These extra measurements show up on size charts and can help fine-tune your fit. But to be honest? The circumference is the big one. Most wig caps are stretchy and will adapt to your shape.

What If You’re Between Sizes?
Let’s say your measurement is right in the middle—like 21.75”. What do you do?

Here’s the breakdown:

Petite fits 21” to 21.5”

Medium fits 22” to 22.5”

If you’re in that in-between space:

Got longer or thicker hair that you’ll be tucking into the cap? You might want to size up for more wiggle room.

Not much bio hair, or planning to cut it shorter? The smaller size should be fine, since wig caps do stretch.

And Don’t Stress—Heads Come in All Shapes!
Seriously. Even if your numbers match someone else’s exactly, the wig might sit a little differently on you. That’s totally normal.

Most of our wigs have adjustable straps at the nape, so you can tighten or loosen the fit until it feels just right. It’s kinda like the bra strap of the wig world.

One More Thing Before You Go
Getting the right wig size is one of those things that makes everything easier. You’ll feel more confident, look amazing, and avoid all the fuss of a poor fit. And once you’ve got your size down, choosing from our latest human hair wigs—like the ones in our PureFit Grip Collection and Colorist Collection—is gonna be way more fun.
