EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT HAIR TOPPERS

August 04, 2019 Views: 70573

We would like to share with you everything you need to know about hair toppers, such as what they are, who they are for and how to style them. Now let's dive into this blog because there's a lot of questions we answered!

What are hair toppers?
Hair toppers are a very popular subject lately, there's a good reason for that. They are lightweight, easy to use and they are excellent for adding volume on top of your head by simply clipping into your hair. Hair toppers come in different styles and sizes, lengths and thicknesses. They can be made from synthetic heat defiant fiber or real human hair.

What are they for?
Hair toppers are a great solution for women with hair thinning or hair loss on the crown and top of their head, but not only that, hair toppers are great for women that have fine or flat hair, because it gives you much more hair volume and coverage on top.

How are they different from wigs?
Wigs are designed to cover your whole head of hair. Your hair will be hidden under the cap and the wigs hair will be on show. This is different for hair toppers, which have a smaller base of hair that can clip onto an area of your head. Hair toppers are excellent to cover hair thinning on the crown or the front area of your head. Hair toppers blend with your own hair and look very natural because your own hair is on show too. Therefore it is important to get a hair topper with the same hair color to yours (unless it is a very large base size in which case the hair doesn't have to match perfectly) for perfect blending. They are great for doing different hair styles. When you wear a hair topper, they are light to wear and not as bulky as wigs.

What are toppers made of?
Hair toppers are made from monofilament, lace or a silk base. The base can vary in different sizes, they can be it can be 1.3”x3”, 5”x5”, 10”x10” and anywhere in between. They also can come in different lengths , and different thicknesses as well. Hair toppers are usually hand-made by workers. A hair topper usually takes about two weeks to create, it can be parted in any direction and it looks very natural.

How do I choose a topper for me?
It is important you know how much hair thinning and hair loss you have. Take a measuring tape and measure your hair loss area from front to back and side to side. Be sure to add an extra inch to each measurement, and then this will be the base size you need. There are plenty of useful videos on YouTube for how to do this. This is going to give you an idea of how big of a coverage you need and you're going to have an easier decision to make when it comes to choosing the base of your hair topper.

How do I style my hair topper?
Usually, if human hair toppers are being styled into the same shape repeatedly, they develop memory and naturally fall into that style. The best way to style them is to put them on a mannequin head, spray them with water, comb them through, hair dry them into place, apply heat protecting spray, straighten them or curl them in the style you like and then you can clip it on your head to style the way that you want.

What is the hair return?
You may notice that your hair topper has some short hairs on the top. You may think that this is damage or breakage. This is called the hair return. The hair return is necessary in the hair topper creation process. Usually 18 inch hair toppers are made from 22 inch long hair, then this piece is looped through the topper base and the four inches is left on top. This actually gives you more volume on top and leaves the ends tapered for easy blending. The hair return can easily be blended with the rest of your hair just by using heat protecting spray or water and a comb. Straightening the area with a flat iron is also very effective.

How do I wash and care for my hair toppers?
Your hair topper doesn't need to be washed as often as your own hair. We recommend you wash your hair topper once every 2 weeks. You may think that is too long to go without washing your hair topper, but your hair topper doesn't need to be washed as often. This is because the topper hair doesn't collect oils from your scalp like your own hair does, so it doesn't get greasy. If you wash your topper as often as you wash your own hair, it will dry your toppers hair out and reduce the longevity. For example, if you went on vacation, you wouldn't need to wash your hair topper until you got back, because it would have collected dust and different air pollutants in the air.

How long do hair toppers last?
Your hair topper can last you anywhere from six months to over a year with daily wear and if you take good care of it. You can prolong the life of your hair topper by storing it in a box when you're not wearing it (which will prevent it from collecting dust) and also using sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners. Sulfate free products will protect the hair from drying out as it doesn't strip oils from the hair. Using deep conditioners, leave-in conditioners and serums regularly will help the hair to stay soft, as it is not being nourished by your scalp oils like your own hair is.

Can I dye my hair topper to match my hair?
If you go with a human hair topper in the exact shade of natural black, you can bleach it lighter it as you like. If your hair topper is another shade, we suggest you only dye it darker but never bleach it. This is easiest to do on our blonder and lighter shades which can take color very well.

How much does a hair topper cost?
That is exactly what we'd like to talk about. The price of hair toppers depends on how large the base is, how long the hair topper hair is, and how thick the toppers hair density is. It also depends if the topper is synthetic or human hair which is more expensive. For example, you can find the different prices for different hair toppers with this link: https://www.uniwigs.com/116-top-hairpieces

Good afternoon. My hair is kind of wavy not a spiral curl but a curl if I leave it dry naturally I just had a haircut it was the diva, so it accentuates the curl. I cannot blow it straight when I blow it straight it looks like frizz. Professionally, more likely they are successful depending on the tools that they use but it doesn't stay straight very long. I saw you're here patches as my hairline is a definite problem I have a little here the center of my forehead at my hairline and no hear at my temples. I did see the hairline piece and I watched the video but I wasn't quite sure how they attached it. I'm curious to know whether or not I should try for two patches for my temples or just put one across my forehead. I do sweat a lot and I do live in Florida so for 80% of the year it's hot. I'm on a farm, and my hair gets wet or I go into the pool would this type of setup stay or what I have to re-glue it or might it fall off in front of people? I have purchased a multitude of hair toppers, quite frankly unless my hair has had a good keratin treatment none of them really are doable especially after this haircut which accentuates the loser curls I'm looking. I'm looking for a piece that has some presents and matches as closely to my bio here as possible I do better with the smaller Toppers that are human hair a lot of the times I have better luck integrating. I've been looking quite a lot today because I'm going on vacation. I looked at the Ivana by Renee of paris, it works for me. My hair is dark dark brown with a little bit of Auburn especially in the light. I also was looking at Claire by unawigs the wavy Style flash curly style. There was a piece that is made by wig Pro they were two small pieces but I can't find the other one one was fusion and there was another one I have one of those pieces but it's kind of weird I don't feel that it integrates well. Years ago I had toppers that were made for me but I since moved and cannot revisit those places. I saw that you also customize Toppers and colors and pets and all of that which is something that I would definitely utilize that service would be invaluable. I can tell you what pieces I have in the house, some of them probably about a half a dozen or so have the tags on it and the boxes I just tried them on a few of them I didn't even try on because the color didn't match. If I order a dark brown I'm usually safe but again it's not completely matching my bio here I'm sorry I'm talking into the phone so there are misspelled words. Please if you can recommend

This was so much useful information for me! Thank You! Can you use tape ins or sew ins with a topper?

    admin 2023-01-02 15:18:47

Hi! Thank you for your comment! For most toppers, you can use the clips to secure them, the clips are sewn on the topper during the production process. For some toppers, the halo wire can be used to secure them. If you need help please email us at [email protected]. We are more than happy to help you!

I am considering purchasing my first topper and Claire sounds right for me . I have androgenetic Alopecia . For the most part my hair looks Passible in public , I have a short bob . I am thinning all over my head but it’s more obvious on my crown . I use toppik powder to hide the thinning on the crown . I should also say that I have a pretty petite head
