1. Select the BASE Type
There are three different types of bases available for Hair Toppers, the Monofilament, Silk & Lace Base. Each of them has their own pros and cons. For the monofilament base, individual hairs are tied to a fine mesh material that allows both light and air to pass through, which can give the illusion that the hair growing naturally from the scalp. The Monofilament Base is soft and comfortable to wear, will not irritate your scalp and can be a great choice for ladies with a sensitive scalp due to chemotherapy treatments or other skin issues.
The Lace Base features a lace material with individual hairs tied the base, which can be a great choice if you want to ensure the front hairline simulates your own. Lace bases are very lightweight and breathable - perfect for hot days! But the knots created by the ventilation technique can be visible around the hair parting line of the lace base.
The Silk Top Base is constructed with a layer of lace covered up by the skin-toned silk fabric on the top front of the cap. The hair firstly is injected through the silk material and then tied into the soft lace to create the knots which are hidden inside the silk material and look completely invisible. Therefore, the Silk Base has the most realistic scalp look that the market has to offer today. When choosing the hair topper, make sure the hair topper's base can offer the enough coverage over the hair loss or thinning hair area. With a fabric measuring tape, record the measurements of the widest points of your hair loss, from front to back and side to side across the area where you are experiencing hair loss. You can use a mirror or ask someone to help you for best results. When you write down the measurements, don't forget to add one inch to each measurement and then this will be the base size you need.
3. Choose the Hair Color
Since the hair toppers need to blend with your bio hair, the color of your Hair Topper should match your natural hair color as closely as possible. However, sometimes it can be difficult to find a perfect color match for every hair shade. Some hair topper wearers also choose their topper color and dye the rest of their existing hair accordingly if they have fallen in love with a color that doesn't quite match up with their natural tresses.
In fact, the medium or small base size will require the close color match between the topper's hair color and the wearer's natural hair color. The hair toppers with large base size will allow for more tolerance for the hair color difference between the topper's hair color and wearer's natural hair color. Therefore, if you are not quite sure about the hair color, you can choose a hair topper with large base size, such as 8.5" *9" or 7.5" * 8" which has a similar hair color to your own hair color.
